Q How quickly will LED signage take over the traditional neon lighting segment?

A Technology advancements continually improve signage and its uses. Due to new technology in the electrical sign industry and, specifically, the illuminated channel letter segment, LED backlit and strip lighting is opening up creative ways, utilizations, and applications changing the face of electrical signage.
The current debate is how quickly will LED signage take over the traditional neon lighting segment? The following discussion will provide you with some of the latest updates and technologies.
Box Letters. Channel letters have become the most commonly used of all types of electric signs. The term "channel letter" was coined for letters with deep sidewalls and recessed light sources that channel the illumination's direction. Today, neon signs and illuminated channel letters are synonymous because most outdoor signs installed in past decades consisted of covered channel-letter signs lit with neon tubes.
There is a wide variety of manufacturers of channel letters across the U.S. and the world. Channel letters can come ordered to your customer’s specifications from a factory or material can be purchased along with products on the market now that allow you to create letters in your own shop. The materials used for channel letters are improving as well. New acrylic-face materials with more color choices are entering the market faster than ever before.
LEDs. LEDs are semiconductor materials that convert electrical energy directly into light. These little light sources have plenty to offer lighting designers, but there are limitations to this seemingly extraordinary light source. The light is very …

over LCD patents
Sharp sued Samsung Electronics, accusing the Korean company of infringing on three Sharp patents related to liquid crystal displays used in high-definition TVs. The Japanese company filed the complaint in the Seoul Central District Court in South Korea. The suit claims the patents cover technology used in LCDs and LCD TVs manufactured and sold by Samsung. Sharp is asking the court to award it compensatory damages, and to prohibit Samsung from manufacturing and selling the infringing products in South Korea. Sharp claims in a statement that Samsung used without authorization … More

China's chip market
set to expand
by 15% in 2007
In light of strong growth in the third quarter, China's semiconductor market appears to be on track to meet iSuppli Corp.'s forecast of a 15% revenue expansion in 2007. China's semiconductor revenue is expected to rise to $52 billion in 2007, up from $45 billion in 2006. This will mark the first time that the nation's semiconductor revenue exceeds $50 billion for a year.
"Strong midseason market demand during the third quarter helped semiconductor suppliers reach their sales revenue targets," said Horse Liu, senior analyst, China Research for iSuppli. "Meanwhile, exports of electronics products also grew significantly despite the negative effects of … More

They're not rock stars,
but EEs earn
satisfaction
In the greater scheme of things, and for the time being, engineers -- especially in North America -- have it pretty good, at least according to their replies to the EE Times Annual Salary & Opinion Survey. Among the findings revealed by the almost 1,600 respondents to this year's questionnaire is that engineers in the United States have median earnings, including benefits, of $108,800, slightly higher than last year's median of $104,300. That compares with European respondents' median of just over $61,000. Japanese engineers reported median earnings of $65,400. The U.S. engineer's life isn't without its worries, however. There are some deep concerns about … More
