 As summer approaches, I found myself reflecting on the past. Last year around this same time, our country and our business were in the midst of some very uncertain economic times. No one was sure what to expect. Like many of our clients, we recognized the new reality confronting most companies and took the necessary steps to shore up and weather the storm. Like many of our clients, we focused on cost containment measures, instituted LEAN initiatives and continued our goal setting and goal-achievement pursuits, all the while still maintaining our intense focus on delivering our clients The Promised Result.
When I look around AWS, I can’t help but feel very fortunate that we’ve managed to survive the tough times pretty well. It was important for us as a company to realize that a potential crisis – difficult and painful though it may be – can become an opportunity to increase our value to our clients by continuing our Elite Pursuit. We are a simpler, more efficient and stronger company.
Looking back through history, it seems that more serious recessions produce greater innovations. And so it was for AWS. This month’s newsletter describes a few of our highlights. I hope you enjoy it.

AWS Receives 2010 IQ Award from Milwaukee BizTimes for Newly Patented VacSimizer® |
|
|
|
 We are very pleased and proud to announce that Advanced Waste Services, Inc. was awarded a 2010 IQ (Innovation Quotient) Award from the Milwaukee BizTimes for the development of the VacSimizer®, the prototype of a truck we developed that allows the trailer to expand and contract to meet highway weight requirements and provide us the capacity and maneuverability we need for many jobs. The truck itself weighs in at a mere 38,000 pounds, leaving an extra 42,000 pounds of available space for waste, the largest legal payload in the vacuum trucking industry.
The IQ Awards honor southeastern Wisconsin companies that are generating innovative products, services or processes. In order to be considered for this prestigious award, companies must be based in Wisconsin, with a physical presence in the greater Milwaukee Area. AWS, along with 9 other Milwaukee-area firms, received IQ Awards and were honored at a luncheon on April 29 at the 6th Annual BizTech Conference & Expo, which is the largest business-to-business conference in the state of Wisconsin.
What does that mean for our clients? The VacSimizer® allows us to complete larger jobs with just one man and one truck, saving substantial dollars for our clients. No one else has anything that can do what the VacSimizer® does. Our goal all along was to perfect the process, create efficiency and make things easier and less costly for our clients.
Not even one week following our receipt of this prestigious IQ award, AWS was notified by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that our patent for the VacSimizer® had been granted, a true and fitting testament to the creativity, idea generation and make-it-happen attitude we seem to have in such abundance in our employees.
We are both pleased and proud of this achievement. We are grateful to our employees who worked so long and hard on developing our VacSimizer® and made such a huge impact on our success. It’s been very rewarding to watch this exciting project jump off the design pages, into development and then into service and, ultimately, to be acknowledged with this very important award. Thanks to each and every one of our employees for having made a huge impact on our company, and for having a direct role in AWS’ success. We look forward to continuing our Elite pursuit!

AWS Welcomes New Result Advisor
 We are pleased to welcome a new Results Advisor to the AWS sales team.
Doreen Schneider will be located out of our New Castle, Pennsylvania facility and will focus her efforts on Pennsylvania and Ohio. Doreen has more than a decade of experience in the environmental/waste industry with other firms, including Republic Waste Services and in Cleveland, Ohio.We are very pleased Doreen will be bringing her strong history of accomplishments and proven track record to AWS.
