Laboratory Mixer Base Plate
One of our regular customers is a laboratory instrument company that brings us many custom manufacturing projects. The company first came to us seeking improved manufacturing and cost savings for an item that had already been in production for several years. Though they didn't ask for a redesign, we immediately saw ways in which the product could be improved.
Problem: The customer showed us a metal base plate for a lab mixer, with 4 stiff rubber feet that were screwed on by hand during assembly – high cost manufacturing.
Solution: As soon as we saw their design, we thought of ways to improve the components and manufacture the base plate more efficiently. To redesign the item, we collaborated closely with the company's engineer, replacing the rubber feet with softer plastic feet that would be incorporated during molding production. Using softer plastic feet reinforced the sturdiness of the base and eliminated the extra costs of screws and, most importantly, labor. More air slots were also added in the plate to enhance cooling of the mixer. |
No less important, we turned a flat plate into an item with style, adding a textured surface with the company's name engraved in it. By replacing the stick-on label with the engraving, we saved another step in the manufacturing process.
Result: These design modifications reduced the cost and time of manufacturing, enabling our customer to invest in additional designs and projects. Many product designs can be customized in such a way to improve quality, esthetics, and manufacturing efficiency.

A Feast of Package Design Ideas
Do you ever wonder where package designers get their most innovative ideas? If you're a package designer, do you know where to go when you need a little extra inspiration?
|
An English package designer named Tara has rounded up 20 of her favorite sources of inspiration and posted them to her blog.
Tara's recommendations include web magazines like Package Design, creative communities, websites, online image galleries, blogs by other designers, and even a handful of books. She mentions Flickr package design groups that discuss general or specific design issues, the package design section of the Deviant Art website, a sustainable packaging site, and sites with international packaging examples.
Her ideas undoubtedly include some you haven't thought of, like online supermarkets and even your own cupboard shelves.
While you're visiting Package Design Magazine, check out our own recommendation: their annual PD Magazine Toolbox. It's large box full of package design goodies, freebies, and suggestions.
