The newest member of the surgery staff at Atlantic Coast Veterinary Specialists is Karyn K. Briggs, DVM, MS, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. Briggs received her DVM degree from Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI, in 1999, and completed a surgical residency at Washington State University in Pullman, WA, from July, 2001 to July, 2004 during which time she received her Master's Degree in Veterinary Clinical Science in 2003 from WSU. Her special interests are orthopedics and soft tissue surgery. She has been practicing small animal surgery in the metro NY area since 2004 and joined the staff of Atlantic Coast Veterinary Specialists in January, 2008. She is available for consultations and surgery Monday through Friday at our Bohemia location.

American Veterinary Medical Association And Hill's Pet Nutrition Launch First-Ever Alliance To Address Pet Obesity Epidemic
America's struggle with weight gain and obesity is an issue that extends beyond the human population -- it is now a serious problem that plagues 54 million cats and dogs in the United States. To address this issue, the American Veterinary Medical Association and Hill's Pet Nutrition announced the Alliance for Healthier Pets, a joint partnership to raise awareness of the pet obesity epidemic and to educate pet owners on the life-threatening health dangers linked to overweight pets. Meanwhile, during the month of February, Atlantic Coast Veterinary Specialists participated in the "National Canine Weight Check" which is supported by the American Kennel Club Humane Fund and veterinarians across the country through a sponsorship by Pfizer Animal Health. Tick-Borne Diseases Are Found In All 50 States
Veterinarians and industry experts concerned with the spread of tick-borne diseases announced the results of a disturbing study that found tick populations are not only increasing in number, but also in reach across the United States. The results were part of a voluntary national veterinary reporting system that was developed by IDEXX Laboratories of Westbrook, Maine. The data uncovered the presence of at least three tick-borne diseases, Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi), anaplasmosis (Anaplasma phagocytophilum) and ehrlichiosis (E.canis), in every state in the country. All three tick-borne diseases can cause mild to severe health complications and even death in humans and dogs, if left untreated.

FLAVORx Teams Up With Wedgewood Pharmacy To Make It Even Easier To Make Pet Medications Taste Good
The Veterinary Division of FLAVORx, which distributes a veterinary-medicine flavoring system, and Wedgewood Pharmacy, the nation's largest compounding pharmacy, have teamed up to provide a new option for veterinarians to make pet medications taste good. The FLAVORx system provides "recipes" that veterinarians use to add flavors to specially formulated prescription suspensions from Wedgewood Pharmacy. The process is said to be quick, easy, and cost-effective -- and make it easier for pet owners to administer medications. It also makes it tastier for pets to take their medicine.

Juliet, a six-year-old English Bulldog F (s) was referred to Atlantic Coast Veterinary Specialists due to moderate bradycardia and dyspnea.

On physical examination, abnormalities included a responsive and alert attitude, an HR of 52bpmin, panting, temp of 101.9 F, and pink MM with CRT of <2sec. Lung sounds were clear with moderately increased effort. The abdomen appeared pendulous and, upon palpation, a cranial organomegaly was noted. No masses or fluid wave. There were some mild chronic geriatric ocular changes at OU with mild serous ocular discharge. Small areas of hyperpigmentation with alopecia at the right lateral aspect of abdomen were also noted. Serum chemistry including electrolytes only showed increased ALT 334U/L (10-100), otherwise normal. CBC showed only mild increases in MCV 78.5fL (60.0-77.0) and Monocytes 2.62 K/uL (0.30-2.0) and decreased platelets 126 K/uL (175-500).
