At AWT, we are always working to anticipate and meet our customer’s needs, whether that means improving vessel safety through new technology innovations or simply designing a system that will save valuable time and improve efficiency.
AWT’s VP of Operations, George Schlinkert, examines improved efficiency via our Data Reporting System (DRS) in the article below. We have had great feedback from Captains that this system lightens their burden while improving data accuracy in communications.
In addition, AWT has been recognized at the Fifth Annual Safety at Sea Award Ceremony, where AWT was a winner in the Systems category for our GlobalView™ software. You can read all about the details of the award below.

Data Reporting System Improves
Captains’ Efficiency and Accuracy
George Schlinkert, Vice President of Operations
In close coordination with our clients, AWT has developed a Data Reporting System (DRS) in order to facilitate transfer of ship information to AWT and ship operators with improved efficiency and accuracy. As ship masters have ever increasing amounts of paperwork and forms to fill out, this program is designed to enable the vessel to participate in AWT weather routing or vessel tracking services without adding an additional burden.
How Does DRS Work?
The position form can be configured such that the ship captain is only prompted to fill out the required fields per the ship operator. The DRS software also performs data-checking on input in order to help improve the quality of the data contained within departure reports, arrival reports, noon reports and off-hire periods.

AWT's DRS accomodates multiple formats to suit customers' requirements.

The software enables Captains to send the same data string to multiple addresses to eliminate repetition and saves the reports in an archive for exporting historical reports.
What if We Use a Different System?
AWT works with several companies which already have their own reporting system in place or are working with other ship management software. In those instances, AWT can cooperate with these companies to interpret their data format for automatic insertion into the AWT routing software. This ensures a high level of data accuracy can be maintained through the position entry process.
A much easier approach however, is for the Captain to utilize DRS for his position reporting. AWT can process the vessel's incoming report and immediately send it out to the client in a specified format for processing in their system.
Designed with Our Customers in Mind
DRS is available to AWT customers as a stand-alone program, but it is also embedded within the BVS 6.0 software. AWT’s goal to make high-quality weather and route optimization software available to ship Captains while minimizing the administrative burden of forwarding information from ship to shore.
We have received very positive feedback from Captains using DRS who appreciate the time savings while increasing the amount of data accurately sent. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

AWT was recently honored as the winner of the Fifth Annual Safety at Sea International Awards in the Systems category for its GlobalView™ Fleet Management System. AWT was also recognized as a finalist in the category of Security. An expert judging panel selected the winners at the event held on June 23rd in London.
AWT’s GlobalView is recognized by Safety at Sea as "a software system that has a direct and significant impact on improving safety of life at sea." The features provided in GlobalView include recent pirate activity and mothership trajectory, updated information on war risk waters and embargo areas, alerts for severe motions and rogue waves, with real-time information about severe weather and wave conditions. These features enable fleet managers to work together with Captains and AWT to enhance safety at sea.
GlobalView is the first fleet management system to provide critical maritime data within the visual presentation of Google™ Earth technology. Data is presented in a customizable, easy-to-use visual format that makes it easy to track real-time weather changes and security concerns, enabling fleet managers to plan safer and more fuel-efficient routes.
About the 2011 Safety At Sea International Awards
The 5th annual Safety at Sea International Awards celebrate the role that safety managers and manufacturers play in saving and protecting life at sea across the international maritime safety market. The finalists and winners for each of five categories, including Equipment, Security, Systems, Training and Management/ Operations can be found in the August issue of Safety at Sea Magazine.
