AWT Insights: A Fleet Operations Briefing
In this Issue
A Word from the CEO
Skip VaccarelloHaving just arrived back from Posidonia, I thought I would give our readers my perspective on the show. Posidonia 2010 was the first time which AWT exhibited. If Posidonia is an indicator, my sense is that our industry is healthy and improving from the doldrums we experienced last year. Exhibitors were upbeat, foot traffic was strong, and people were interested in buying.
As a company we got much interest particularly in our on-board software, Bon Voyage System (BVS), as our main customers for the product are owners who dominate the Greek market. We also received good interest in our routing services and the combination of routing and BVS for maximum fuel and environmental savings.
It was also gratifying to hear from customers and business partners that AWT is on the right track in delivering products and services that make a difference in safely sailing their ships and saving fuel and time.
I should also add that the weather was hot, the amount and variety of food and drinks in the exhibitor’s stands was a surprise and very good, and our Greek hosts were a delight.
Thank you,
Skip Vaccarello

How Odfjell Tankers Is Using Applied Weather Technology to Improve Efficiency, Enhance Safety While Reducing Fuel Consumption, Costs and Carbon Emissions
by Rich Brown
Background
Odfjell GroupThe Odfjell Group is a leading participant in the global market of the seaborne transportation and storage of chemicals and other specialty bulk liquids. The Odfjell Tankers fleet includes about 90 ships, trading both globally and regionally. The Odfjell Group is headquartered in Bergen, Norway and has more than 20 offices worldwide. The Odfjell Group has about 3,700 employees and annual gross revenue of about $1.3 billion (USD).
Odfjell Tankers Issues Challenge: Give Us Your Best Route Recommendations
Odfjell Tankers, Ship Operations, was seeking ways to improve fleet performance while reducing carbon emissions. They approached Applied Weather Technology (AWT), and asked the company to provide route recommendations for several voyages taken by Odfjell Tankers’ ships. AWT demonstrated how Odfjell could enhance safety, improve fleet performance, save money and reduce carbon emissions.
Odfjell Tankers Deploys AWT’s Routing Services and Onboard Software
Erik Hjortland, advisor on ship performance and bunker management, says ultimately that Odfjell Tankers chose AWT over competitors because AWT specializes exclusively in the maritime industry, provides responsive customer service and offers innovations in marine voyage optimization technology. AWT is the largest company that exclusively specializes in providing the shipping industry with voyage optimization services and onboard software, routing 35,000 vessels per year.
AWT worked closely with Odfjell to make it possible for Odfjell Tankers’ ship operators to view AWT’s recommended routes and compare them to the ship Masters’ intended routes, while also seeing key data such as the ships’ estimated times of arrival, speeds, and the latest weather, giving ship operators better understanding of the rationale behind AWT’s recommendations.
Results: In First 90 Days, Odfjell Tankers Save 30 Sailing Days, Reduce Fuel Consumption by 1,000 MT and Carbon Emissions by 3,000 MT
Odfjell Tankers at SeaDuring the first 90 days of implementing AWT’s ship routing services onboard approximately 65 vessels, Odfjell Tankers realized measurable benefits, with a number of vessels steering clear of severe storms, potentially preventing significant ship damage and/or crew injury. AWT was able to show time savings of about 30 sailing days, equivalent to fuel savings of approximately 1,000 metric tons (MT) in the first ninety days. This equates to fuel savings of $475,000 USD and a reduction in carbon emissions of 3,000 (MT).
“We believe AWT’s shore-based service in combination with the onboard software will assist us to protect the crew and cargo, reduce heavy weather damages, provide more accurate vessel scheduling, curb emissions and ultimately reduce fuel costs – a winning proposition for our company, customers and the environment,” said Mr. Hjortland.
Odfjell Tankers’ story shows how today’s shipping companies can maximize safety and efficiency of their fleets while minimizing environmental impact from fuel consumption.
