| It's Your Move |

The moving season is upon us. Approximately 65% of all annual moving occurs between June 15th and September 15th. Ask any real estate agent and they will tell you they have the most closings at this time of the year. This is mostly dictated by the school year. School lets out and families move. |
| Subsequently, most moving companies become stretched at this time. How can you avoid a bad move and have a good move given these conditions? Start by following these suggestions: |
Make sure the moving company has a brick-and-mortar building: that is an office and a warehouse you can visit. Go there if you can. See if you can meet the owner. |
Get a sense of the operation and staff. How long have they been in business? Do you know anyone who they've moved? Can they give you references? Check the company out at the Better Business Bureau and the NY State Dept. of Transportation. Have they many complaints? See if they have association affiliations such as the NYSMWA or LIMSA. These are three associations that have requirements and standards that its members must meet and maintain. LIMSA has a code of ethics. |
Next, get three written on-site estimates. Make the moving company come to your home! Compare them line by line; the number of men, the time, weight etc. There are different ways of estimating moving for both local and long distance moves. Make sure you truly compare apples to apples. |
Make your decision based on the record of the company and its presentation and – yes – costs. Keep in mind, sometimes less expensive companies don’t deliver on their promises. While most licensed companies are professional and ethical, make sure you get everything in writing as you would with any contractor you hire. |
Moving companies have limited liability for moving your household goods. It is 30 cents and 60 cents per pound per article respectively for local and long distance moving. Most companies will offer additional insurance at a cost to you, the shipper. I recommend you purchase this additional insurance especially on long distance moves. Be sure to insure your goods for the full value of the entire shipment otherwise the insurance company will not pay in full if there is a claim. |
Be as prepared as possible by marking all boxes (on the sides, not the top!) and packing anything and everything before the moving day! Also, avoid (if you can) moving at the end of the month since this is when moving companies are busiest and can actually get sold out! This is particularly true of long distance moves. Just follow some of the above tips and you are sure to have a less stressful move. |

| Good luck in your new home! |

April has by far presented us with the best economic news in this never ending downturn! Homes, co-op, and condo sales all surged well into the two digits! We'll soon discover if this will be the continued trend now that the first time
home buyer's tax credit has expired. Unemployment also made a move downward - finally! Other sectors
are looking good too and the moving business is also feeling all the gains. It should be a good summer. |
