NY Delivers a Holiday Present - Tax Amnesty |

New York has announced that beginning January 15, 2010 through March 15, 2010 all eligible businesses and individuals will be able to settle back most tax assessments that are more than 6 years old for an 80% discount on any outstanding interest and penalties, and assessments more than 3 years old are generally eligible for a 50% discount on any outstanding interest and penalties. The state is calling this limited time program “PAID” for Penalty and Interest Discount.

Sales Tax On the Twelve days of Christmas,
The Tax Department sent to me:
On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me,
A partridge in a Pear Tree,
Which he gave the store a farming exemption certificate to avoid sales tax on the tree.
On the second day he gave to me - Two Turtle Doves,
That was purchased as pets,
So sales tax was paid.
On the third day he gave to me - Three French hens,
Who hired an English translator,
That correctly did not charge them sales tax on translation services.
On the fourth day he gave to me - Four Calling Birds,
Who made all their phone calls,
Using their taxable phone cards
On the fifth day he gave to me - Five Golden Rings,
Which is subject to sales tax,
Whether you pay cash or not.
On the sixth day he gave to me - Six Geese A-Laying,
Who were later served on a platter,
And taxed as prepared foods.
On the seventh day he gave to me - Seven Swans A-Swimming,
In a tax exempt pool,
Because the pool was built as a capital improvement.
On the eighth day he gave to me - Eight Maids A-Milking,
Who are paid on salary,
Which is not subject to sales tax.
On the ninth day he gave to me - Nine Ladies Dancing,
Without worry because they know,
Their dance lessons are nontaxable.
On the tenth day he gave to me - Ten Lords A-Leaping,
So don’t be scared to leap too,
Because participatory sports are nontaxable.
On the eleventh day he gave to me - Eleven Pipers Piping,
If you can’t hear them,
At least hearing aids are tax exempt.
On the twelfth day he gave to me - Twelve Drummers Drumming,
But don’t pay sales tax on the tickets
If they’re playing in concert.
And even old Saint Nick files his sales tax returns on time,
To avoid interest and penalties from being assessed
