SPOT Leverages Unprecedented Imaging Capabilities in Search for Steve Fossett
(Military Geospatial Technology magazine recently ran a feature story describing how SPOT leveraged its satellite– and ground-based assets to support emergency responders in the search for missing aviator Steve Fossett and other recent incidents. The following is a synopsis of the article.)

In the aftermath of disasters and emergency events, first responders and decision makers need access to the latest geospatial information that accurately depicts the situation on the ground. Both natural and man-made incidents in recent years have demonstrated that commercial Earth observation satellites are often the most efficient means of acquiring this information. The recent search for missing aviator Steve Fossett has best illustrated the capabilities of commercial imaging systems to fulfill emergency response needs. During the search, SPOT Image Corp. leveraged the imaging capabilities of four satellites in its remote sensing constellation to put a steady stream of imagery into the hands of the Nevada National Guard and other decision makers within hours of data acquisition.

Spot Image’s Next Satellite to be Built Mainly With Private Capital
Surging demand for medium-resolution imagery is expected to propel satellite Earth observation data and services provider Spot Image over the long-awaited revenue goal of 100 million euros ($147.8 million) in 2008, permitting the company to fund its badly needed next satellite from mainly private sources, Spot Chief Executive Herve Buchwalter said.
