Change Is Good!

If you were expecting to receive the NetworkMoves e-newsletter, you're in for a surprise. We've changed!

Until now, we've talked about how to network. It's now time to tackle the next important subject -- how to market yourself and your products online using the latest technologies, which are e-newsletters and the Web

Our new monthly newsletter, Online Marketing Tips is going to be informative, fun, engaging, and, we promise you, short. And, hey, it's still free! Some things never change.

We have experts poised to give you tips on marketing, writing, design, and technology … and there's nothing they'd like better than to get your feedback and answer your questions.

You can still opt out and browse the two years of archives of NetworkMoves. (The last issue was February, 2004). But if you want new stuff, stay subscribed and we'll help you grow your business and career.

The New CAN-SPAM Act: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

The world of e-mail marketing changed overnight when Congress passed the CAN-SPAM Act.

The Good: As long as your messages are not misleading in subject, "From," or content, and you include your street address (not PO box) and a working opt-out link, you're OK.

The Bad: If anyone clicks on your opt-out link, no one can ever send them commercial e-mail about the brand that the initial message was about.

The Ugly: An opted-out address has to disappear from all your house lists, lists you rent, branch office lists, outside sales reps' lists, independent affiliates' lists...you name it!

Do what you can today, but start work on brand-wide opt-out soon.

To Do: Create A Bulletproof "To-Do" List

If you're writing anything more complicated than a shopping list, the details will kill you if you let them. Use a "to-do" list for each project to be sure absolutely nothing falls through the cracks.

Writing projects move in fits and starts. There's a fact that needs looking up. Contact information to add. That chart you need to revise.

So start using "to-do" lists today. You'll get those writing projects off your desk in a jiff … and your clients will appreciate the results.

Don't Just Send Them Home

Have you ever focussed all your attention on the effectiveness of an ad or e-mail, and then simply linked the traffic to your corporate home page? If so, your buck missed some serious bang.

Recapture that bang by linking to a landing page or mini-site that continues the message of the creative and then rewards your visitor with discounts, give-aways, or other good information.

Compared to a good landing page, the home page is just a fizzle.

Treat Your IP Address Like A Toothbrush

Got e-mail marketing? Then it pays to be obsessively careful not to attract the attention of over-zealous spam police.

To keep your e-mail act squeaky-clean, be sure you're not sharing an IP address with other mailers. Otherwise, the spam police may slam you for the misdeeds of someone you're sharing with.

No matter how you send your e-mail, ask your techie: Who else sends mail using my IP address? The right answer -- no one!

Treat your IP address like a toothbrush. Keep it clean, and don't share it.
